Thinking About Skipping Your Engagement Session? Read This First

A pre-wedding or engagement session is one of the best ways to get comfortable with your photographer before the wedding day. It also gives you real images you can actually use, for your website, save-the-dates, and wedding stationery. I highly recommend doing one. There’s also a way to approach it that can actually save you money, I’ll explain that shortly.

You Get Comfortable in Front of the Camera

An engagement session takes that pressure off. You get a feel for how I guide, how I shoot, and how to just be yourselves without overthinking it.

Couples portraits don’t make up your entire wedding day but they do matter. It’s usually about 20–30 minutes, and this is where you learn exactly what to expect during that time. How I direct, how I move you, how I keep things natural without forcing anything.

More importantly, it shows you how I operate with people. That same approach carries over to your family, your guests, and the rest of the day.

By the time your wedding day comes around, you’re not walking in blind, you already know what to expect.

You Get Real Content You’ll Actually Use

An engagement session isn’t just for the experience - you walk away with content you’ll actually use throughout your entire wedding process.

  • Your wedding website.
  • Save-the-dates.
  • Invitations.
  • Guest books.
  • Welcome signs.
  • Social announcements.

Instead of pulling random photos from your camera roll or cropping old pictures that don’t quite fit, you have a full set of images that are consistent, intentional, and actually represent you as a couple. Everything matches. Everything feels cohesive. You’re not scrambling last minute trying to find “something that works.” You already have it ready to go. It also gives you flexibility. You can choose photos that fit different formats—horizontal for websites, vertical for social, tighter crops for print. You’re not forcing one image to do everything.

And because these are done ahead of time, you’re not relying on wedding day photos for things that need to be sent out weeks or months in advance.

If you like the way I work and decide to move forward, I’ll prorate that session into your wedding package

How to Make an Engagement Session Worth It

Short answer: Yes. Depending on how you approach it.

If you’re on the fence, one option is to book an engagement session first and treat it as a trial run. See how the experience feels. See how the photos turn out. If you like the way I work and decide to move forward, I’ll prorate that session into your wedding package so you’re not paying for it twice. I also include engagement sessions in select packages. Not as a gimmick, but because I actually value the time we get to work together before the wedding. It makes a difference in how the entire day runs and how your photos turn out.

If you’re not booking with me, this is something you should still look for.

Ask your photographer:

  • Do they offer engagement sessions as part of their packages?
  • If not, can that session be applied toward your wedding if you book them?

Not everyone does it—but it’s worth asking-and that's what saves you money.

At the end of the day, it’s not just about saving money. It’s about getting value out of something that actually improves your experience and your photos.

You’re not guessing. You’re making an informed choice.

But if you’re unsure about anything - your photographer, the process, or how you’ll feel on camera - it’s one of the easiest ways to get clarity before it all matters.

If you’re on the fence, I’m always open to talking it through and seeing what makes the most sense for you.

You can expect around 70–150 fully edited images, depending on the session. Everything is delivered through an easy-to-use online gallery (Pixieset), where you can view, download, and share your photos.

What should we wear?

Keep it cohesive not matching. Stick to softer, neutral tones. They photograph better and keep the focus on you.

Avoid loud patterns, heavy logos, hats, and ripped jeans or distressed clothing. The goal is clean, simple, and timeless.

If you’re unsure, I’ll help you put something together that works.

What if we’re awkward in front of the camera?

I can work with the most introverted couples. I’m good at reading the room, keeping things relaxed, and adjusting how I direct based on your personality. If you’re not super outgoing, we’ll keep it low-pressure and natural.

From choosing a more private location to guiding you in a way that actually fits you, everything is built around making you feel comfortable—not forcing you into something you’re not.

How long is the session?

Most engagement sessions run about 45 minutes to an hour. Enough time to get comfortable, move through a couple of spots, and get a strong variety without it feeling dragged out.
